National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) - an independent federal agency, based in Washington (State of Columbia), established by the U.S. Congress to oversee the federal credit union system. Most modern credit unions represent specialized consumer cooperatives of citizens associated by the principle of social community: place of work, place of residence, profession, or any other shared interest. At the organization of the credit union it is important that people know each other and know the extent to which each of them is trustworthy. International cooperation has been particularly felt since the days when Alphonse Desjardins began the activity on development of credit union movement in North America. Shareholders in corporate organizations are basic credit unions, besides the same union can be a shareholder of several corporate organizations. The supreme body of the World Council of Credit Unions is the Assembly, which elects the president and the board of directors of WOCCU. Credit unions are financial institutions, financial cooperatives of citizens, and in this capacity they are above all associations of people, not unification of capitals, which is typical, for example, for public companies. To increase the number of credit unions in 1979 was adopted the corresponding law that serves as the legal basis of their activity.
