Corporate credit unions are united on a cooperative basis in the Central Credit Union (US Central Credit Union). When organizing the credit union it is important that people know each other and know the extent to which each of them is trustworthy. The main advantage of credit unions consists in transparency, controllability, governance for shareholders. Since the early 80's started the process of consolidation of credit unions, leading to a decrease in their number with a simultaneous increase in the total number of members. In the credit union compensation for use of the loan (interest) is a source of compensation for savings. The main activities of credit unions, aimed at the organization of mutual aid and social support of citizens is not intended to profit. Credit unions base their activities on savings of shareholders, their shares and savings contributions, which make up the fund of mutual financial assistance - a source of cash loans to shareholders. U.S. credit unions have another significant difference from the credit cooperatives of farmers: the first have major proportion of short-term loans, the second - long and mostly in real estate.
