In the U.S., credit unions have a clear organizational structure. All credit unions belong to one or the other parent credit union (there are 35 of them in the U.S.). At the organization of the credit union it is important that people know each other and know the extent to which each of them is trustworthy. To reduce the risk of default on loans members of the credit union shall the joint guarantee. National Credit Union Insurance Fund was created by Congress in 1970 to insure deposits of credit union members in the amount of 100 thousand dollars. Credit unions, like today's credit unions, emerged in the 19th century in Germany as a result of crop failure and famine. On the consumer credit market in the U.S. credit unions are on the third place after the commercial banks and finance companies and are ahead of savings institutions, not taking into account the loans on real estate. A credit union on its own initiative order is created by citizens (individuals) to solve their financial problems that they could not solve in other financial institutions.
