First Credit Union was savings unprofitable institution, or rather credit cooperative, providing services to its members. Cooperation between credit unions, how they would not have been named, took place always, from the moment when the movement moved outside one credit union. The main advantage of credit unions consists in transparency, controllability, governance for shareholders. Shareholders in corporate organizations are basic credit unions, besides the same union can be a shareholder of several corporate organizations. In some cases, the initiators of credit unions can be trade unions, associations such as social support centers and others. Credit unions base their activities on savings of shareholders, their shares and savings contributions, which make up the fund of mutual financial assistance - a source of cash loans to shareholders. Credit unions encourage the proper use of shareholders savings, developing social programs (education, health, recreation, housing, etc.). Worldwide credit union movement is represented by regional confederations and national organizations within the World Council of Credit Unions.
